1. Does my supplementary insurance participate in fitness costs?

In Switzerland, mandatory basic insurance covers no costs for your fitness subscription. Anyone who wants to receive a share of the costs needs an outpatient supplementary insurance with prevention or health promotion tariff.

Depending on the supplementary insurance, insurers cover not only fitness subscriptions, but also yoga and Pilates courses, back training, movement programmes or pregnancy gymnastics. Some providers reward your activity additionally with premium discounts or bonus points.

3. Which fitness studios are recognised by insurers?

Insurers do not cover every fitness subscription. Prerequisite is a valid quality certification of the studio. In Switzerland, most insurers require at least one of the three widespread labels: Qualitop, QualiCert or Fitness-Guide.

The certification status of your desired studio you clarify directly with the studio or your insurer. Within the same studio chain, the recognition can be different from branch to branch.

4. Do I have to provide a training proof?

So that the insurer pays out the cost participation, you must prove your membership in the fitness studio. Depending on the provider, the subscription confirmation of the studio, the receipt for the paid subscription costs as well as frequently the contract copy are submitted. Individual insurers additionally require a visit proof, usually 24 to 30 documented training sessions per year.

Good to know: submit receipts on time

If you miss the submission deadline of your provider, usually end of the calendar or insurance year, the reimbursement entitlement usually lapses fully. Therefore submit the receipts directly after subscription conclusion or payment and keep a copy for your records.

5. Is supplementary insurance worthwhile only for the fitness subscription?

The conclusion of a supplementary insurance exclusively for the fitness reimbursement rarely pays off. Many tariffs cover further outpatient benefits. These include alternative healing methods such as acupuncture or homeopathy, supplementary therapies such as medical massages as well as movement courses such as yoga and Pilates. In combination with these benefits, supplementary insurance can be sensible.

When taking out new insurance, insurers require a health questionnaire. An existing policy you should therefore only terminate as soon as the new provider has accepted you. For fitness benefits, usually no waiting periods apply, so that the subscription is covered from the start of insurance.
