What does legal protection insurance cover?

Legal protection insurance protects you from the financial consequences of a legal dispute. It covers, among other things, lawyers' fees, expert reports, court fees, the procedural compensation to the opposing party and criminal bail as an advance, up to the agreed sum insured. Most companies also include a telephone legal advice service.

Not covered are, among other things, fines and penalties, intentionally committed acts as well as events that arose before the start of cover or were already foreseeable. Family law disputes such as divorce or inheritance proceedings, construction litigation, tax proceedings and most criminal proceedings are also excluded or only covered within the scope of legal advice.

What is the difference between private and traffic legal protection?

Private legal protection covers everyday disputes, for example in tenancy, employment, consumer or insurance law. Traffic legal protection applies to legal disputes around your vehicle and mobility, for example after an accident, over a fine or in a dispute about purchase, leasing or repair. Both can be taken out individually or together as combined legal protection.

In principle, the cause, the triggering event, must have arisen after the contract was concluded. Existing or known disputes are excluded.In addition, some companies set a waiting period of around three months for certain legal areas; during this time these cases are not yet covered. How long the waiting period lasts differs from provider to provider and is set out in the general insurance terms.

What does legal protection insurance cost?

The premium depends on the chosen scope. Private legal protection for a single person usually costs between around 150 and 400 francs per year, traffic legal protection between around 50 and 300 francs. Combined private and traffic legal protection is often somewhat cheaper than both separately and lies between around 180 and over 500 francs. For families, premiums are higher than for a single person, but the whole family is insured. On top of each premium comes the stamp duty of 5 percent.

When can I cancel my legal protection insurance?

You can cancel in three cases: at the end of the agreed contract term, in a covered claim and when moving abroad. For the ordinary cancellation, watch the notice period, which is often three months, otherwise the policy is tacitly renewed for one year. In a covered claim, you can usually cancel within 14 days of the last payment. When moving abroad, the deregistration confirmation from your Swiss municipality is sufficient.
